The Hardscramble was built in 1841 by
brothers Ben and Henry McCulloch. It sits at the headwaters of Mill Creek and is located on the original Callaghan Trail.
Later the building was occupied by
Nathaniel Benton and Elijah Dale. All
were heroes of the Texas Revolution
and Texas Rangers.

In 1936, due to the efforts of Mrs. Mae D. Mertz (decedent of Elijah Dale), a Texas Centennial marker was dedicated to honor the location. In 2011, the site was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
The Hardscramble is currently owned by the Vickers family.

Famous Texas Rangers and Veterans all of the Texas Revolution. Bravery, skill, and courage, were common attributes of men who dared the wilderness of Texas but no patriots of Texas ever offered greater service then did the McCullochs, Benton, and Dale.

Erected by the State of Texas 1936.

In 2018. the Hardscramble was restored thanks to funding provided by Joe and Eve Vickers. Joe and Eve recognized it's historical value and the importance of honoring the daring founders of the Republic of Texas.
